Thoughts on the Veil

Hi there, just wondering what others think about the
Veil that Sirius fell through in OotP.
I believe that it has some sort of function as a portal
between the realms of the living and that of the dead,
and that the 'whispering' sounds heard are that of
the souls of those departed. I think that there may possibly
be a connection between the Veil and the dementors,
and also between the Veil and the room that Harry & co
could not enter while at the Ministry of Magic. I've heard
it called 'The Room of Love' or something like that,
though I'm not certain if it is called that in canon.
Anyway, any thoughts on the function of the Veil?
