Joe:
I would think that DD's ability at legilimency would give him a leg up 
(or a flipper up in this case) in understanding a speaker of a foreign 
language. Perhaps he could see visually what the Merpeople saw (HP 
helping all of the hostages). Although I think the book actually said 
he spoke mermish as well. Legilimency may not help there unless you 
can project thoughts and images as well as read them.
