that's an interesting theory, but I believe (yet cannot check, not having my
books with me just now) that in fact the Dursleys had given Harry mouldy
presents before he became 11 and acquired Hedwig.  Can someone with access
to canon confirm or deny this at all?  I like the idea of it being part of
the "pact"...
