Just my thoughts on this matter - IIRC, JKR said that Harry would be
receiving the pet before HBP - and it was not clear whether that would
be in Book 6 or 7.

Well, Harry did receive a new pet in Book 6 - Buckbeak (now
Witherwings) - so I am not sure if he would be getting yet another in
Book 7. Hwoever, it would be great if Fawkes did in fact team up with
Harry, as he would bring a lot of hope, strength and healing ability,
all of which IMO, will be very useful to Harry's quest.
