I can't be the only one thinking this every time I read this thread,
so I'll put it out there.  Here's the thing about the what-if scenario
with Slytherins infiltrating Gryffindor Tower.   If they'd managed to
uncover what Ginny was up to and turn her in, they'd be heroes.
They'd get awards for special services to the school, no one else
would be petrified, the Chamber of Secrets could be located and the
basilisk dealt with by qualified adults (even if they needed Harry to
help them open the sink) and Quidditch would be on.  I don't think
anyone would have much problem with that, aside from wondering why
"Harry Potter" is in the title of the book.
