Carol responds:
It's almost certain that Peter Pettigrew was present at Godric's
Hollow. Maybe he waited around long enough (in rat form) to see Hagrid
find Harry and Black give him his motorcycle. then he could reverse
the story--he realized that Black was missing, hurried to godric's
Hollow to prevent catastrophe, and arrived too late to save the
Potters. He could mention the scar and say that Black tried to take
the baby away but Hagrid was taking him to Dumbledore.
Or the Ministry could just show up to investigate and contact
Dumbledore as a matter of course as someone who knew the Potters and
might have an idea what had happened.
I agree that the information was published very quickly, which must
mean that the Ministry passed it on to the Daily Prophet almost
immediately, but I don't think that Dumbledore, who was trying to
protect Harry, volunteered it.
Carol, hoping that the missing twenty-four hours will be adequately
explained and aren't just another example of JKR's hopelessness at "maths"
