JKR did get pinned into a corner on the Gryffindor Heir. I'm inclined
to think that Harry isn't a descendant of Gryffindor but possibly the
Potter ancestors had been collectors and collected Gryffindor's sword.
Possibly this is what Voldemort planned to use for the horcrux that
was to be made with Harry's murder. Who knows, perhaps this is why the
Potters thought he was after them, not because of the prophecy.
Many people have speculated that James's money came from the fact that
the Potters descend from the inventor of the Golden Snitch. This does
fit with the fact that JKR says James is a chaser but we see him
drawing a snitch on his OWL exam (with L.E.) and playing with a snitch
out on the lawn (we later learn from Lupin and Sirius this was rather
common). The Quidditch through the Ages refers to something that is
'in the hands of a private collector'. Circumstancial support, yes -
but JKR has left possible clues. That's what she does best.
