Finwitch:
Though I seem to recall reading that in the Middle Ages - when Church
was THE POWER - the Godparents *were* additional guardians to parents
and would take over if something happened to the parents. The same
middle ages when wizards hid themselves from Muggles, you know...
So it's plausible. In addition, I'd say that the wizarding ceremony is
magical, and thus the *chosen* godparent is magically set as the
child's guardian, sealed by the godparent's acceptance.
Choice is very relevant theme - to Dumbledore, anyway -- the one who
knows ancient magic. It was another ancient magic Dumbledore envoked:
Lily's choice to give her life for Harry's and Petunia's to take Harry in.
I suppose that made Sirius Black's escape - when WW thought he planned
to kill Harry - very special. The magical bond as Harry's godfather
would have allowed Sirius to cross the barrier Dumbledore's ancient
magic evoked on Mother's-sacrificial-blood. Because, as Dumbledore
tried to tell Fudge - it's choices, not blood that matter. Sirius and
none other *could* have gone there, and reach to Harry.
And apparently it involves other barriers, too - including Azkaban.
Not that even Sirius knew how it worked -- but after he realised that
Harry, his godson, was in danger - Azkaban could no longer hold him.
Same was true for his warm, sunny island - and for Grimmauld Place. We
have yet to see if the bond's strong enough to conquer death.
