I'm sure others have thought of this, but it has not come up. I
think the earlier quoted material where MG is telling Rosemerta and
Fudge about Sirius still leaves the door open to the theory that DD
performed the Fidelius charm for the Potters. He had argued about
who to use, he had offered himself. But the Potters stood firm on
Black, he would die for them, and that was that.
They were not privy to Peter possibly convincing Sirius that a secret
keeper whose identity was really secret would be better than having
the most obvious choice (someone who was "inseperable", "like a
brother", everyone knows it) of Sirius do it.
PP and SB would have known they could not get the Potters to agree,
after they turn down DD, himself, for the job. But PPand SB think
they know better (or at least that is the path PP is leading SB
down), and "for Potters' own good" PP gets SB to allow him to poly-
juice, and maybe/or not SB poly-juices to PP so he can be there,
too.
Lupin says,"We were young, thoughtless - carried away with our own
cleverness" p.355 PoA pb. They were like that. They thought it was
a cunning plan.
So DD is called in to administer the charm. It seemed that 4 people
would know who the secret keeper was: James, Lily, Sirius and DD,
maybe PP and Lupin, and of course anyone else who took a guess at it
would come up with Sirius. But there stood a Sirius!poly-juiced!
Pettigrew as secret keeper, and so only 2 people really knew: SB and
PP.
Would have been a great plan if PP was not scum.
I am driven to this theory because I don't think the Potters would
pick PP over DD.
This is how DD can still come off as "epitome of goodness" and still
let Sirius go to jail. He thought he *knew* Sirius was the SK. Since
JKR said DD is EoG, we have to make pieces fit as best as we can to
that.
Not a ship, but does it float?
