Magpie:
I think whether it floats or not (obviously there's no mention of it
in canon) Dumbledore thought that Sirius was the Secret Keeper so it
doesn't effect whether or not he was being the epitome of goodness at
the time. DD's mistake wasn't in whether he actually saw Sirius take
the oath or not but in the fact that he assumes that Sirius being as
far as he knows the Secret Keeper=Sirius being the spy and murdering
Peter and a dozen Muggles. All of these things fit into a perfectly
neat story, but they don't automatically follow from the first
assumption, which is wrong anyway.
As to whether it works I don't know that it's more believable than the
Potters just agreeing to Peter, who was, after all, a trusted friend
they thought. The alternative seems to have Sirius tricking James
into entrusting his family to someone he hasn't agreed to entrust his
family too, and that sounds like a much bigger thing to do. I also
think Sirius would probably have said something about it, because it
would make him even more of an active help to Peter. Getting further
into the nebulous character area, it doesn't seem like Sirius would do
that to James.
