I was going to post that maybe Sirius's old suspicions of Lupin were
waking up again, but I don't see any canon to support that. I do think
the strain of being cooped up told on Sirius's ability to care for Harry--
not that he loved him any less, he just didn't have the mental energy
to cope with the needs of a troubled child. Anybody who has tried
to juggle the demands of parenthood and a serious illness like
depression will probably know what I mean.
It is tempting to think that someone in the house was slipping him
something, but that would weaken the point that JKR said she was
trying to make, that adults are human and they struggle.
