here's my two cents worth on what turned Snape.

>From what JK Rowling has shown us, Severus Snape is
NOT the most like-able person and the few glimpses
into his past has not been fun to view. Which leads me
to believe that he probably was drawn to the dark arts
initially because of what he has gone through. I am a
fan of Snape/Lilly, in the least Snape respecting
Lilly for (according to Prof. Slughorn) her potions
talent, and at most having feelings of love for her.
To me it would make the most sense for him to go to
the 'dark' side first, and the main reason he came
back to the 'light' side before the fall of LV was due
to trying to save Lilly. I don't see him being
concerned with the threat to James but I can see him
being worried in regards to Lilly and trying to make
attempts (albeit ubiquitously) to prevent her from
dying. I do tend to think that he is 'on the fence' at
this point but that first turn was due to lilly.
