I've always wondered whether the need for secrecy with the later 
books has meant that the editing part has been 'too little, too 
late'. Ideally such a long series with such a convoluted plot and 
involving a multitude of characters and a whole alternative world 
would require a team of sharp-eyed pedants to pick up on continuity 
errors and plot holes. Perhaps they didn't dare show it to many 
people - the more people involved the more potential for 'leaks'.
