Melissa, DD didn't delay his battle with Grindelwald for 5 years after 
Ariana's death, he delayed it for 5 years after he was asked to deal 
with G-wald, IMO. He was "forced to do so by the pleas of the wizarding 
world". It seems quite clear from the "King's Cross" chapter that many 
years  passed between the two wizards first meeting and their last 
battle.
