And I am equally sure that she did not. A few weeks ago I finished
Christopher Tolkien's history of the LotR. Even though it was of only
secondary importance at best to his story the elder Tolkien fretted
obsessively over the phase of the moon. At one point he mentions the
need to consult some experts on how much later the moon would rise
each night at a certain phase in its cycle and time of year. Rowling
on the other hand wrote an entire book about a werewolf in which the
phase of the moon is absolutely critical and she gave nary a thought
to making it consistent.
I think that you can amuse yourself forever by discussing her
continuity errors. At the end of the day if you want to enjoy the
books you have to be willing to ignore them and just ride the roller
coaster. I have no problem switching from one mode to the other.
People who are stuck in one mode or the other either have their
enjoyment spoiled, or must devote themselves to an endless defense of
the indefensible.
Ken, who thinks it is an immensely enjoyable work but no where near a
finely crafted one.
