Quite right.  I don't know where my head was when I wrote 
that, plainly not in the book.  I think what confused me 
about the timeline was the fact that Snape talked to 
Dumbledore's portrait *before* he went to 12 GP and 
it would have to have been before the meeting at Malfoy 
Manor, before Voldemort took over the MoM and Hogwarts.  
How did Snape come to be in DD's office?  But it's not 
really a problem.  It's not hard to imagine Snape breaking 
into Hogwarts after the students had gone home and, of 
course, DD's office would have been open to him.
