*chuckle* I remember feeling the exact same way about THE LORD
OF THE RINGS ... and by that time I had read many, many books.

Have you tried the Diane Duane Wizard series that begins with SO
YOU WANT TO BE A WIZARD? I find it interesting to compare these
with HP because they're also about young people learning to use
magic, and involve serious moral choices, but Duane goes in very
different directions with it.
