This is because he did not believe it was possible for DEs to get
into Hogwarts.

That he trusted her to lead the defense, means he believed her worthy
of that trust in terms of her loyalty to the cause, and that he
believed her capable of it. That she later showed herself more than
capable, just shows he trusted the right woman for that job.
