Either way, they cannot be recombined with Morty; otherwise, wouldn't it be better to let the soul pieces roam free than to put them in objects, which can be captured and destroyed?
Consider, there must be a reason why even Dark magicians shy from making horcruxes. The most obvious reason is that, while it makes you harder to kill, with a piece of your soul gone, you are not "you" any more. I do admit that I am taking an educated guess that, when your body dies, if you have a horcrux, then the soul piece in your body is gone, and it is the soul piece that is in the horcrux that keeps you from going beyond the Veil.
