Hi There!
Well it is a matter of timing really, Harry is asleep in one room,
and they are in the other room, Voldemort breaks in and James and
him fight, but Voldemort kills him and gets into the room before
Lily can get to Harry.  She begs for his life if you remember, so
she might simply have never been able to get to him, and stood
between Harry and Voldemort, which in the end caused him to kill her and
then attempt to kill Harry.
