I have been thinking exactly the same. I always wondered why that was
Snape's worst memory. Really, although it was embarrassing, I wouldn't
qualify it as the worst a person can have.

However, it makes complete sense now, that this was the moment of his
biggest mistake, his biggest regret, the moment he pushed Lily away.
