Well, in OotP, it does seems that Lupin did spend some time visting
with Sirius at number 12 - afterall, when Harry went to ask about the
Pensive scene, it was Lupin who initially responded at Sirius' home. 
It could be that the two of them spent a lot of time together during
that year.  They did have a lot of catching up to do and Lupin, being
the sort of sensitive soul that he is, would have realized how lonely
Sirius was, as he was forbidden to leave the house.  I could see that
Sirius talked about a lot of things, including Regulus.

that is my take on it - I know it sounds very simple, but I can
imagine the two of them, over butterbeer, talking away.
