However, to be fair, let's look at his alternatives. 

1) Harry CAN defeat Voldemort. This does not mean that Harry is the ONLY one who can defeat Voldemort.

2) If Harry does not defeat Voldemort, he will die. 

Therefore, Harry, trained to defeat Voldemort, lives. Harry, NOT trained to defeat Voldemort, dies. It makes sense that Dumbledore puts Harry into real danger during his training; if he's not ready by the time of the Big Confrontation, then he's dead anyway.
