The practice being referred to is asking a student three questions to
which the student is unlikely (not impossible; Hermione at least
certainly seemed to think she knew them; just unlikely) to know the
answer. Unless you perhaps misunderstood what we were talking about, I
think you ought to explain further why you think it's "utterly
contemptible and abusive"? He didn't even take points off for not
knowing the answers.
