Development, maturation, perfectionment--these are not straight
line processes in real people, and we should not expect it in 
literary creations. "Three steps forward, two back" is a part 
of life; had JKR not depicted the kids thusly, we would have 
long ago dismissed them and her as totally unbelievable.
