"Carol, who thinks that the idea of magical nonhumans as "races"
is misleading and the idea of Giants (or Trolls) becoming civilized
(made to act like humans) is unfeasible at best"

Precisely. The exact mistake that Hermione, from her Muggleborn
perspective, is thinking that the other sentient species are just
funny-looking humans. They aren't. Now, Ron, as a pureblood Wizard,
makes the opposet mistake--thinking that because they aren't human
that they are utterly different from us, have nothing in common
with us, and to try to relate to them as equals is futile and
a waste of time. The truth is--as it is so often--somewhere
inbetween.
