Much like the diversion of Sirius Black in PoA, when the *real* bad
guy, who has been right under Harry's nose all the time, is
completely overlooked. Scabbers is thrown in our faces over and
over again, being chased by Crookshanks, looking ill,
disappearing.... and we completely overlooked him as well. :)
Meanwhile the "threat" of Sirius Black was no threat at all.
