Just to correct one myth perpetuated by the movie (and to move this 
thread completely OT): of course Sauron had a body; on what did he wear 
the Ring? And you'll recall Gollum specifically mentioning Sauron's 
missing finger.

But yes, there is much humor in Tolkien, even in the first book. If 
Eggplant missed it, I suspect that might tell us more about Eggplant 
than it does about Tolkien.
