Geoff:
Yes. However, there is perhaps a parallel here with Voldemort who
was unbodied after the Godric's Hollow attempt on Harry's life at
Hallowe'en 1981.

As GOF records:
'"My curse was deflected by the woman's foolish sacrifice and it
rebounded on me. Aaah... pain beyond pain, my friends, nothing
could have prepared me for it. I was ripped from my body, I was less
than spirit, less than the meanest ghost... but still, I was alive."'
(GOF "The Death Eaters" p.566 UK edition)

...and we also have:
'But Sauron also was thrown down and with the hilt-shard of Narsil,
Isildur cut the Ruling Ring from the hand of Sauron and took it for his
own. Then Sauron was for that time vanquished and he forsook his
body and his spirit fled far away and hid in waste places; and he took
no visible shape again for many long years.'
(The Silmarillion, "Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age")

Sound familiar?
