I think that this is similar to the point in HBP when Harry pretends
to give Ron some Felix Felicis. Ron, beleiving that nothing can
possibly go wrong, plays brilliantly. Voldemort believes that just
because he possesses the Elder Wand he will be imbibed with its
power. It is only later that he realises that he is no more powerful
than he was before.
