I can't remember right now if it was mentioned in the earlier books (I 
haven't reread them in a long time :-), but in DH, in "The Prince's 
Tale" chapter, the Sorting ceremony is described, and "Harry watched 
Lupin, Pettigrew, and his father join Lily and Sirius at the Gryffindor 
table" (p.672 Am. ed.). Hope it helps!
