Thank you, that helps. It appears that the main reason that PP was
sorted into Gryffindor is so that it looks plausible that he would be
chosen as Secret Keeper for James and Lily. Yet it would have taken a
fair amount of bravery and daring to keep up with the Marauders'
exploits, and Pettigrew went through a lot to bring Voldy back, in
spite of Voldemort's assessment that Pettigrew was a coward. However,
the Sorting Hat's mention of 'chivalry' connected with the Gryffindor
House certainly does not fit Pettigrew--but neither does it fit young
James, come to think of it.
I guess dividing pre-teens into just 4 houses is not an exact science.
At least astrology has 12 houses. LOL
