I don't think Ron not knowing about the Sorting Hat was a mistake on JKR's 
part, but rather it has a canon explanation: Fred and George! There were 
always teasing Ron, and spread a false story of what it would do just to 
torture him. It was just too much fun for them not to tell Ron the truth!
