I don't know. We used to try to work out what professions different 
characters might have had. Many people saw Snape as a researcher or a 
potions maker. He was so into his tests at school, teaching might have 
been his chosen profession. 

Horrible, I know! 

But back to canon, there must have been something that made Snape's 
being hired at Hogwarts seem reasonable.
