Pippin:
He was trying to raise up Harry to *survive* his destiny, which was to
be murdered by LV. The centaurs told Harry that first year. But he
chose to hope they were wrong. 

I'm not familiar with the Avatar series either. But, assuming there's
an ongoing plot, I'll bet my pointy hat this Iroh will turn out to
know something more than he's saying.  That's what being wise *means*.
