Exactly, if Harry is going to be stunned or killed in his sleep it 
doesn't matter what wand he uses. But what about when he is awake and 
on duty? Wouldn't make more sense to have the best possible wand?

We don't know the capabilities of the wand. DD managed to use it for 
50 years without any problems and he was known for doing some 
powerful magic. Was it the wand or just him or a combination. If I 
was Harry I wouldn't be so quick to dispense with the wand. If he 
keeps it hidden for a few weeks and works with it he can better 
determine if it would be more useful.
