I'm pretty sure that a wand is needed to create a Horcrux. Slughorn
said there is a spell to encase the torn soul piece inside an object,
and, if there is a spell, a wand is required, IMO. I think JKR
promised to describe this process in her encyclopedia. I'm really
looking forward to it :-).
