You have to defeat not just any opponent, but the master of the wand.
Harry took Bella's wand from Draco, but Draco wasn't Bella's wand
master, so it didn't matter if Harry defeated Draco - this victory
couldn't make Harry the master of Bella's wand. That's what Pippin
meant, I think. Hope it makes sense :-).
