Carol responds:
I agree with you that Harry didn't believe that Voldemort would
repent, and, I, too, would have done the same thing. I'm not sure how
not giving that information would make Harry more active in killing
Voldemort (it certainly didn't influence the Elder Wand's behavior,
and an Expelliarmus is still, in itself, a defensive spell that can do
no more than disarm the opponent--Harry, of course, hoped for
something more). I think it was simply a matter of doing the right
thing regardless of consequences. Harry knew what Voldemort was in for
if he didn't repent; he knew that whatever slight chance LV had of
even partially repairing his soul and improving his afterlife depended
on his feeling remorse. It was his only chance. It would have been
wrong not to tell him regardless of whether he acted on the
information or not. Sometimes, a good person does the right thing
*because* it's the right thing, and for no other reason.
Carol, who thinks that the ending was designed for symmetry, to
parallel the events at Godric's Hollow and bring the novel full
circle, however improbable the plot devices required to bring about
that ending
