Pippin:

First, there are no identifying uniforms except in the movies. The
students in the books wear black robes, identical except for size. 

Harry mistook a Ravenclaw for a Slytherin in CoS, not to mention being
completely bamboozled by Diary!Riddle. Of course he was a Slytherin
all along, but the narrator never bothered to mention it. 

Harry knows (or assumes) that people he hasn't met are Slytherins
because of where they are: in class,  sitting at the House table,
grouped together at Quidditch matches or leaving the dungeons. 

As someone who shares Harry's ineptitude with names and faces, 
I'm not certain Harry could pick even Nott and Zabini out of a crowd
after a year's absence.  I probably couldn't.
