I wonder if other Snape's Slytherin friends (Mulciber, Avery & Co) were also a year or two older than him. That would explain why they were not around during and after that DADA OWLs exam, and why Snape was all alone there with no one to come to his aid... :-).

That's how I see it as well. My guess is Lucius believed the diary was supplied with some kind of built-in Imperius curse :-). Anyone who opened it or used it would be put under the curse and therefore would obey the diary's command and re-open the Chamber.
