If the Australian authorities were really putting every middle aged couple from the UK under enough scrutiny that they're going to be noticing nervousness and grilling them extensively, they'd probably notice "inconsistancies" that come up when someone's actually been memory charmed and so missing a few screws! The Grangers are in witness protection, basically. Hermione wouldn't think twice about her ability to pull this off without a memory charm. Can't help but think the assumption that her parents absolutely need a complete memory erasure to get through customs--and that they would pretty much beg for such a thing because it would be so much easier for them than giving a fake name--seems like a side effect of Muggle infantalization (no where else do the Muggle authorities show any level of competence).
