Miles:
I cannot speak for John, but I think the phrase "you weren't eleven every 
day" is a bit surprising for a non-native speaker. At least it is for me, 
though I understood the meaning from the context. If you understand it 
literally, it does not make much sense. Native speakers will understand (and 
use) such an idiomatic phrase without thinking too much about it, but if you 
don't know it...
