I don't think Snape was power hungry. When he argues with Harry and Sirius on the train, it's knowledge he attributes to Slytherins and later he pays a great deal of time and attention to his OWLS. As an adult--and even as a teen--he seems to want respect.

I do not remember an argument between Snape, Harry and Sirius on a train and I have read all the books more times than I can remember. Could you please tell me where that scene is?
