I see it rather differently. I think Voldemort did not kill Snape himself, because he would have needed to use the wand in his hand to do it. This was the Elder Wand, a wand which had belonged to Dumbledore, and, Voldemort believed, now served Snape. It would have seemed a poor choice of weapon against Snape for that reason.
I think his half-hearted attempt to spare Lily was in the same spirit as his gift of the silver hand to Peter. Not a sign of any affection or esteem, but a means of control. Supposing that Voldemort had indeed spared Lily - what would Snape have been willing to do to ensure her continued existence? Why..."Anything"!
