It had been a long time since they had met and I'm not sure that DD hadd not overtaken Grindenwald in ability.  I suspect DD would not have met Grindenwald, without being fully prepared.  As to the wand,  Grindenwald could not have been its Master because he stole it.  He did not get it in a fight.

I don't know about that - they had not seen each other in about a hundred years.  I do think that DD put off going after Grindenwald (which he regretted) and did not kill him, "for old times sake".
