He is probably speaking the truth as he knew it.  Either he presumed that to be the purpose or Snape gave LV the only excuse LV  would be willing to accept.  I doubt Snape could have said: I have loved her since we were children and I just want to be sure she is alive in the world somewhere, so that I can feel life is still worth living.
