My answer is that yes, DD redeemed himself, because that was the whole
reason for his wanting to believe the best of everyone. Of course, I also
realized exactly how manipulative he was from the beginning of the series.
Come on, folks, he sends Harry to live with muggles, sets Snape up as his
ultimate double agent and maneuvers everything around from the beginning of
the story. So yes, he was manipulative. For the greater good. Does that
make it right? No. Not necessarily. Did it make it necessary? To defeat the
greatest evil the WW had yet encountered, maybe so.
