***Name:
Blaise
***Age:
21
***Family:
Just married! Well, almost a year ago, actually. My husband is a physicist and computer programmer and likes HP too but not as much as me.
***Education/Job/Role in Life etc (& Home too):
Currently at Oxford studying Classics - ask me about Aristotle and Augustus and Latin or Greek etymology!
***Other things we might want to know about you:
Nothing of great interest - Catholic, would-be writer, rather conservative in spots. Hufflepuff (or maybe Ravenclaw, but probably the former). Very fond of Tolkien.
***First contact with Harry Potter:
Before PoA came out, reading my baby sister's copy of CoS late at night and being absolutely petrified by the Basilisk. I waited avidly for PoA and then felt an absolute fool for not working the werewolf thing out from Lupin's name and the cover illustration.
***Favourite Potter things (books, characters, ships, fics, objets
d'Art, general enthusing):
I think I don't have a favourite book any more, but if I did it would be PoA. Lupin and Snape have been vying for ages for favourite character, and Snape is winning, but he fights dirty. I write fanfiction, or rather I've written fanfiction and OotP is making me write more. Most of the previous stuff is Lupin or MWPP, but this is going to be Snapefic. I don't do ships as a general rule, though I'm not averse to a good romance. It's probably redundant, around here, to say I love the whole world to bits, and I'd love to ride a flying horse.
***Extent of Potter obsession:
No expensive collecting owing to being a poor student, but I pore over the books. I used to have a Slytherin scarf, although it was actually my school uniform one. I tried to read PoA in French and got fascinated by the translation of the names. The films were fun, although they've done funny things to my re-reading the books which make me reluctant to see the film of PoA. But I certainly expend enough time and energy on fanfic writing! I suppose I must have been rattling around the fandom almost since the start, though I haven't been around much lately until the OotP fever drew me back. It's a lovely place to be, and I'm rather flattered to be here.
***Other interests/activities:
There's life beyond stories? Scottish country dancing, and singing in choirs and playing the flute. And too much cooking. But I tend to be obsessive about what I do and therefore don't do a great many things.
***Current/recent reading:
OotP! I'm enjoying my second, slower read after the rapid first one so that my husband could have the book when I was done. And I reread all the previous books during the past few weeks.
the Vorkosigan books by Lois McMaster Bujold
Tolkien: Man and Myth by Joseph Pearce
lots of classical authors, very slowly and painstakingly, in the original
***Current/recent listening:
Carmina Burana, La Bottine Souriante, and whatever my husband plays on the piano. Also, unfortunately, the loud pulsing sounds the neighbours are playing.
***Current/recent viewing:
I don't watch television unless someone sits me down and makes me. Wimbledon at the moment, I suppose.
I'm glad to be here, and thank you for organising this!
Blaise
