Ah, but if the motive is to eliminate Hx!Harry...
 
I can see it all now.  Dumbledore has punted ("punted" as in the 
American football "giving up" sense, not the British betting sense).  
Caring for Harry too much, he was overheard to say "I'd give my right 
arm, nay, my very life, not to have to do the deed" and Snape, 
scowling in disgust, obliged him in both ways.
 
But then, Snape himself can do no more, because it says right there 
in his job description, right under "Glide through the halls like an 
oversize bat": "Save Harry Potter's miserable life at every 
opportunity."  Or so Talisman, who actually reads fine print, tells 
me.

Really, it's practical-minded Hermione who might well have the 
cojones for the job.
 
Either her, or Neville "brave enough to stand up to his friends" 
Longbottom. 
 
Yeah, that's it.  My money's on him.
